Project Overview
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is designing roadway improvements for Interstate 10, from milepost (MP) 208 at the State Route (SR) 87 Traffic Interchange to MP 213 near the eastern edge of the Community of Picacho. The proposed improvements include widening I-10 from two lanes to three lanes in each direction and a realignment of I-10 through the Community of Picacho, which will improve freeway safety by reducing the number of curves along I-10, improve roadside safety by eliminating a substantial length of elevated freeway and eliminate the most visual impacts of the freeway by removing existing embankment. The goal of the project is to increase capacity and improve traffic operations and safety of this segment of I-10.
As part of the I-10 Corridor Study from Jct. I-8 to Tangerine Road, three options for the alignment of I-10 adjacent to the Community of Picacho were presented at public meetings held throughout the corridor in May 2007, and comments from the public were received for review and consideration. After further study, discussion and input, the project team recommended the preferred alternative, which includes the above-described realignment of the freeway through the Community of Picacho. This was presented to the public at a neighborhood meeting held at Picacho Elementary School on Aug. 21, 2008.
